Wrangle data,
create a design,
make a difference!

The topic and data will be released on Tues, Nov 7th are released below, with submission deadline NOON Tues, Nov 14th.

This one-week visualization challenge invites entrants to grapple with a topic and present an insightful story, argument, or solution though data, text, and graphics. We are particularly interested in entries that
reveal actionable insights that highlight opportunities for personal, collective, or institutional change.

Once you receive the topic prompt, we encourage you to pursue your own research ideas, drawing on public data, personal interviews, web scraping, machine learning, survey, observation, APIs, library archives, text mining or other methods. All data must be ethically obtained and properly cited.

Designs may include data visualizations, text, maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, data art, 3D design, network, flow diagrams, photography or other art using computational or manual methods.

All UO undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Entries must be original and may be individual or collaborative (shared prize). Interactive/digital entries and print/poster entries are both encouraged. Evaluation criteria will be the same: clarity, depth, novelty, and design quality.

All entries must be accompanied by an creator’s statement describing the work (150 words), including data sources and methods used.

Challenge now closed!

FOOD. What works? What doesn’t?

Food is a critical area of study today, affecting our lives at many scales from our own personal well-being and health, to our cultural experiences, and beyond to climate change to biodiversity and geopolitics.

We invite challenge participants to grapple with any aspect of our local and UO food systems – from agriculture, economics, sustainability, nutrition, health, climate, accessibility, culture, waste, ecology, security, transportation, and justice.

We are particularly interested in entries that reveal new actionable insights that highlight opportunities for personal, collective, or institutional change.

Data provided are meant to be a starting point. While this is framed as a competition, we strongly encourage participants to serve everyone by open sourcing any discovered, collected, or cleaned data throughout the challenge.

Transportation and Parking Info

Joining us from off campus? Try the EmX, 28, 73, 78, 79x, 81, or 98 to Dad’s Gate Station or UO South Station.

One-day parking passes cost $5 and can be purchased from uoregon.aimsparking.com. The closest lots to the Library are in zones B-South or B-West. One-day parking passes usually sell out, so we recommend purchasing up to 2-days in advance. Or there is metered hourly, and free 2-hour street parking west of campus.
