Data Visualization, Cartography, GIS, and Web Mapping

Fall 2024

The InfoGraphics Lab seeks student applicants with interests in design, data visualization, cartography, GIS, and web development to join our team. The InfoGraphics Lab is a research and design hub on campus that develops data visualizations for print, web, and mobile and is best known for its award-winning series of atlases.

Paid, work-study, and credit hour positions are available for current UO students at 8-20 hours per week.

These hands-on experiential learning opportunities include direct interaction with project leads (faculty researchers, state and federal agency partners, UO campus initiatives, etc.) and provide valuable technical and professional development, particularly in the area of spatial data science and design. Former employees have graduated to great jobs at Esri, The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, National Park Service, Apple, Google, as well as a variety of federal, state, and local government agencies and private companies.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong interest in design, cartography, data visualization, GIS, and/or web development have a desire to learn while working on research and real-world mapping applications. We look for candidates that are highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to think creatively, solve problems, and work well in a collaborative setting. These positions are applicable to students from a wide range of majors – geography, planning, environmental science, design, journalism, computer science, etc.

Students working in the Lab experience a professional working environment where they gain experience in a variety of GIS, mapping, and graphic design software packages/environments, including Esri’s ArcGIS suite, Adobe Creative Suite, R, Python, and other programs. Previous experience using these software applications is desirable – but not required. Students may also have the opportunity to be involved with custom mapping application development. Previous experience in web programming, HTML, CSS, D3, Leaflet, Mapbox are also desirable – but not required.
